How Does ADSL Work

ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) is a type of DSL (Digital Subscriber Line).

 

It works by splitting your existing telephone line signal into two; one for voice (normal telephone) and the other for data transfer.

 

The majority of services are available through a broad range of broadband suppliers who are reselling products from network operators. British Telecom (BT), the main network operator in the UK, dropped the 'wholesale price' of broadband which means better prices for the consumer.

 

It is the responsibility of the network operator to deliver your data (whether it is transmitted using a standard modem, ADSL or some other means) to and from your Broadband Supplier of choice.

 

It is a common misconception that BT is the only source of ADSL service - when in fact, BT is just one of many companies currently competing for your custom.
