ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) is a type of DSL (Digital Subscriber Line).
It works by splitting your existing telephone line signal into two; one for voice and the other for data transfer.
The most popular broadband services in the UK at the moment are running at speeds of 512Kbps (approx. 10 times faster than a modem), although dropping prices are resulting in 1Mbps and 2Mbps broadband packages being available almost at the same price as some dial-up services!
Also, some broadband providers are currently offering up to 4Mbps although do not be surprised when you begin to see many more 8Mbps premium services, the current maximum broadband speed possible on the UK phone network.
